Hermann-Joseph Draer,
connu au village de Saint-Mélany (Ardèche)
sous le prénom d’André,
est né le 27 novembre 1920 à Luckenwalde
(province du Brandenburg, Allemagne). Hermann-Joseph Draer, known in the village of Saint-Mélany (Ardèche) by the given name André, was born on the 27th November 1920 at Luckenwalde (province of Brandenburg, Germany).

Ses parents, originaires d’une région de Pologne annexée à l’URSS, s’étaient installés dans cette ville l’année précédente.
En 1929, ils quittent Luckenwalde et viennent s’établir à Paris où leur sont délivrés des papiers de réfugiés russes. His parents, native to a region of Poland annexed by the U.S.S.R., had settled in this town the previous year. In 1929, they left Luckenwalde to settle in Paris where they were issued with papers as Russian refugees.

Sous l’occupation allemande, la quasi-totalité de la famille établie en France ou restée en URSS a été déportée et exterminée. Seul le foyer d’Hermann (ses parents, ses deux s½urs et son frère regroupés à Toulouse) a échappé aux raffles.

Under the German occupation almost the entire family, whether settled in France or remaining in the U.S.S.R., was deported and exterminated. Only Hermann’s family (parents, two sisters and a brother reassembled in Toulouse) and escaped the roundup of suspects.

|
|
|
Dans ses écrits, Hermann Draer relate comment, de villes en villages, à
travers le sud de la France, son parcours l’a conduit jusqu’à
Saint-Mélany où il a finalement trouvé le refuge lui permettant de
vivre les derniers temps de l’occupation, en sécurité avec sa famille. Décédé en avril 1982, ses cendres sont déposées au cimetière de Saint-Mélany.

|
In his writings Hermann Draer recounts how, from towns to villages, in the south of France, his movements took him to Saint-Mélany, where he at last found the refuge that allowed him to live out in safety with his family the last phase of the occupation. He died in April 1982. His ashes were placed in the cemetery of Saint-Mélany.

Les survivants, conjointe et descendants d’Hermann Draer
tiennent à ce que pareil témoignage soit pérennisé et remettent à la Mairie de Saint-Mélany (Ardèche),
une copie du texte « Français de Drôme et d’Ardèche »
rédigé par Hermann-Joseph Draer.
Une plaque commémorative est érigée au cimetière de Saint-Mélany.
Une copie de ce texte a été remise au
Comité Français pour Yad Vashem (Mémoire de la Shoah),
Département des Justes de France.

The survivors, wife, and descendants of Hermann Draer are
anxious that a testimony such as this should be preserved and they now
hand over to the town hall of Saint-Mélany (Ardèche) a copy of the text
“The French People of the Drôme and the Ardèche” composed by
Hermann-Joseph Draer. A commemorative plaque is erected at the cemetery of St Melany. A copy of this text has also been entrusted to
the French Committee for Yad Vashem,
Department of the Righteous of
France.
